Madan Lal Dhingra: The Immortal Sacrifice of a Brave Revolutionary
17 August 1909.
Outside London’s Pentonville Prison stood Veer Savarkar.
He was waiting to receive the body of a 25-year-old young revolutionary.
But the British government refused to hand over the body to anyone.
That young man was none other than India’s fearless revolutionary — Madan Lal Dhingra.
From a Wealthy Family to the Path of Revolution
Madan Lal Dhingra was born into a prosperous and educated family. His father was a civil surgeon under the British government. He was sent to England for higher studies.
But wealth and luxury did not attract him.
The dream of India’s freedom burned within him.
In England, he came in contact with Veer Savarkar and was drawn into revolutionary activities.
The Assassination of Curzon Wyllie
A British army officer, Curzon Wyllie, who had enforced brutal repression in India, returned to England.
He was trying to mislead young Indians with false promises.
Madan Lal Dhingra decided —
The oppressors must be taught a lesson.
On 1 July 1909, during a gathering at the Imperial Institute in London,
he fearlessly shot Curzon Wyllie dead.
Death Sentence and Immortal Words
Madan Lal Dhingra was arrested and hanged on 17 August 1909.
Standing in court, he fearlessly declared:
> “The British government has no right to try me.
The government which is killing millions of innocent patriots in India
and every year loots millions of pounds from India to England —
I do not recognize its law.
Conclusion
Madan Lal Dhingra’s martyrdom remains an immortal chapter in India’s freedom struggle.
He proved that —
the firm resolve of even a single young man can shake an empire.
